The Endocrine System
نویسنده
چکیده
the endocrine, or hormonal, system is the primary regulatory mechanism for virtually the entire human body. Hormones are chemical messengers that control and coordinate the function of tissues and organs. Each hormone is secreted from a particular gland and distributed throughout the body to act on different tissues. Hormones are released as a result of nerve impulses or in response to specific physiological or biochemical events. Following their release, hormones instigate a cascade of reactions within the body, the end result of which can include synthesis and release of enzymes and changes in cell membranes. Highly sensitive feedback mechanisms reduce or increase the amount of different hormones being released at any given time. The effects of alcohol on endocrine function are multiple and complex. Several variables, including the type, length, and pattern of alcohol exposure; level of intoxication; and coexisting medical problems, such as malnutrition and liver dysfunction, must be considered when assessing the impact of alcohol on hormonal status. This article summarizes the effects of both acute and chronic alcohol exposure on hormonal physiology, addressing work performed on humans and animal models.

In the religion of Islam, fasting is obligatory for healthy adults during Ramadan. Millions of Muslims around the world practice fasting in this holy month which may cause different metabolic and hormonal changes due to the restrictions in regular caloric intake. This article was aimed to review some possible effects of Ramadan fasting on the endocrine system which has a great impact on physiol...
متن کاملEffects of endocrine disruption by 4-nonylphenol ethoxylate on the grwoth preformance and immune responses of female and male immature Koi carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio)
Nonylphenol (NP) is an endocrine disrupting chemical which has been shown to be able to modulate endocrine system of various organisms by different mechanisms. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential effects of 4-NP and 17-β-estradiol (E2) on immune parameters (IgM level and lysozyme activity) of Koi carp (Cyprinus the carpio carpio) in an attempt to expand the knowledg...
متن کاملIntrauterine programming
In mammals, the intrauterine condition has an important role in the development of fetal physiological systems in later life. Suboptimal maternal environment can alter the regulatory pathways that determine the normal development of the fetus in utero, which in post-natal life may render the individual more susceptible to cardiovascular or metabolic adult-life diseases. Changes in the intrauter...
متن کاملVitellogenin assay by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as a biomarker of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) pollution
There are increasing evidences that show many xenobiotic chemicals (called as endocrine disruptorchemicals EDCs) through interfering with endocrine system, have the capability to induce developmentaland reproductive abnormalities in humans and animals. The yolk protein precursor vitellogenin (VTG) hasproved to be a simple and sensitive biomarker for assessing exposure of fish to EDCs especially...

Background and Objectives: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive endocrine disorder, affecting at least 10% of women in reproductive age. It is associated with hyperandrogenism, obesity, menstrual iregularity and infertility. There are several hypotheses regarding the metabolic, genetic, epigenetic, and environmental causes of the disease. Although the main cause of the dise...
